Sun exposure, ultraviolet (UV) irradiance and serum 25 hydroxycholecalciferol (25OHD) in pregnant women in rural North India
نویسندگان
چکیده
Methods The measurements of UVB radiation energy were obtained using UV spectrometer at different times of the day between 9 am and 4 pm, in different seasons. The instrument was calibrated to denote 13 microWatt/ cm2 of irradiance per mVolt of deflection. Measurements were taken at our institution (situated in the countryside), at crowded inner city areas and the villages where our subjects resided. The clothing, outdoor activity pattern, and dietary calcium intake were prospectively documented. Serum 25OHD was measured by radioimmunoassay (Diasorin, Stillwater, MN).

MS Sunshine Study: Sun Exposure But Not Vitamin D Is Associated with Multiple Sclerosis Risk in Blacks and Hispanics
Multiple sclerosis (MS) incidence and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels vary by race/ethnicity. We examined the consistency of beneficial effects of 25OHD and/or sun exposure for MS risk across multiple racial/ethnic groups. We recruited incident MS cases and controls (blacks 116 cases/131 controls; Hispanics 183/197; whites 247/267) from the membership of Kaiser Permanente Southern Cali...
متن کاملPrediction of solar ultraviolet intensity by using Fuzzy Logic in the north-west of Iran
Introduction: Solar energy is one of the free sources, clean and environmentally friendly energy. Sun is the most important source of natural ultraviolet radiation that has a major role in the life of living beings. Industrial and medical applications of ultraviolet radiation have been clearly proven, like the production of vitamin D or treatment of many diseases, and also har...
متن کاملEffects of sun exposure on 25(OH) vitamin D concentration in urban and rural women in Malaysia.
Ultraviolet B sunlight exposure is a primary source of vitamin D. There have been reports of low vitamin D status amongst the Malaysian population despite it being a tropical country. This study was conducted to determine the influence of sun exposure on 25(OH)D concentrations in urban and rural women in Malaysia and factors predicting 25(OH)D concentrations. Women aged above 45 years were recr...
متن کاملHigh prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among pregnant women and their newborns in northern India.
BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in India, a finding that is unexpected in a tropical country with abundant sunshine. Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy has important implications for the newborn and infant. There are few data from India about the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in pregnancy and in the newborn. OBJECTIVE Our aim was to determine the prevalence of osteomalacia a...
متن کاملVitamin D Deficiency And Its Related Health Effects: An Indian Perspective
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that has mainly two types D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalcifererol). While vitamin D can be obtained from dietary sources (D2 isoform) the biggest contribution to an individual’s circulating levels of vitamin D, in most countries, is through endogenous production in the skin following exposure to ultraviolet(UV)-B radiation from the sun. Exposure to UV-B ...
